Fairfax Collegiate Math Power

Empower your elementary student with math.

Your child can love math, truly understand core math concepts, excel at problem solving, and be a confident math student.

In Fairfax Collegiate Math Power students enrich and extend their regular elementary school math by learning Singapore Math in small-group classes for two hours each week.


Stage One: Grades 1 to 2
Advanced Early Elementary Math

Get your student off to a fast start in math.

Using the Singapore Math concrete, pictorial, and abstract method students learn about whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, time, and money.

Stage Two: Grades 3 to 4
Arithmetic and Word Problems

Student learn and master the four operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and integers.

Word problems require careful reading and creative application of math. Topics include time, money, perimeter, area, and volume.

Stage Three: Grades 5 to 6
Transition to Algebra

Students consolidate their mastery of elementary school math, simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions, and solve complex word problems.

Stage 3 prepares students to qualify for and excel in Algebra I as seventh graders.


Singapore Math is the national math curriculum of Singapore. Students from Singapore regularly come out on top in international comparisons of national math achievement such as Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA).

Singapore Math focuses on problem solving and is built upon five supporting components:

Concepts: Numerical, Geometrical, Algebraic, Statistical, Probabilistic, Analytical

Skills: Numerical calculation, Algebraic manipulation, Spatial visualization, Data analysis, Measurement, Use of mathematical tools, Estimation

Processes: Reasoning, communication and connections, Thinking skills and heuristics, Applications and modelling

Attitudes: Interest, Confidence, Beliefs, Perseverance

Metacognition: Monitoring of one's own thinking, Self-regulation of learning

Fairfax Collegiate Math Power Instructors

Steven Nossal

Steven Nossal founded Fairfax Collegiate, Northern Virginia's leading summer enrichment program. He has personally taught math to hundreds of students over the past thirty years. Mr. Nossal earned a B.A. in Economics from Yale University.

Chloe Xie

Chloe Xie is a Senior at Langley High School. Last year she completed Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra. This will be Chloe's second year teaching in Fairfax Collegiate's school year math programs.

Lianhan Li

Lianhan Li is a Senior at Langley High School. Last year he completed Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra. This will be Lianhan's second year teaching in Fairfax Collegiate's school year math programs.
